Chapter 38 Into the Depths of Shadowmire Hollow
But before she could even think about lying down, she heard footsteps outside her doorheavy and purposeful. It swung open, revealing Enara standing there with a mischievous smirk on her face, eyes narrowed with the promise of mischief.
"Liria," Enara said, her voice dripping with unearned authority, "I have the perfect idea. Tomorrow, you and I are going to clear a dungeon."
Liria blinked. "A dungeon? Isn't that… a bit much for some casual bonding?"
Enara waved her off with an airy laugh. "Oh, please. It's just an F-rank. Shadowmire Hollow. It's practically a tourist attraction."
"F-rank or not," Liria started cautiously, "we still need permission. And what's even in this dungeon?"
"Oh, you know," Enara replied, clearly not knowing, "some monsters, maybe a few traps. Whatever. The important thing is that it'll be fun."
[Note to self,] the System chimed in. [Define "fun" as "a situation where you're likely to face mortal peril because of a demon princess's whims."]
Yeah, thanks for that, Liria thought dryly. "Let's ask first," she said aloud, hoping this would somehow derail Enara's enthusiasm.
It didn't.
By the time they stood before Enara's parents, Liria was already second-guessing every decision that had led her to this moment.
"Shadowmire Hollow?" Queen Verida, the red-skinned demon queen, leaned back in her chair, her golden eyes narrowing slightly.
"It's perfectly safe!" Enara exclaimed, flashing a winning smile.
Nyssara, the lavender-skinned queen, exchanged a look with her partner. "For some, perhaps," she said gently, her lilac eyes resting on Liria. "And you're sure this is necessary, Enara?"
"Absolutely," Enara declared. "I'm already strong, but Liria needs the experience."
[Wow, she really threw you under the demon carriage there,] the System remarked.
Liria bit her tongue.
Daena, who had been listening in silence, finally spoke. "If they go, I'll ensure they're well-prepared." She glanced at Liria. "But don't get in over your head."
Verida let out a sigh, leaning forward. "Fine. But you'll return immediately if it gets dangerous." Stay updated through empire
Enara beamed. Liria tried to muster some enthusiasm but only managed a faint smile.
Shadowmire Hollow was located on the outskirts of the palace grounds, nestled in a dense, eerie forest where the air seemed unnaturally thick. The entrance was a gaping cave, its edges covered in dark, glowing moss that pulsed faintly like a heartbeat.
"This looks… inviting," Liria muttered.
Enara grinned, already stepping forward. "Come on. It's an F-rank. What could go wrong?"
[Is that rhetorical, or should I start a list?]
Liria ignored the System, gripping her sword tighter as they entered.
The interior of the dungeon was dimly lit by bioluminescent fungi scattered along the walls. The air was damp, and the faint sound of dripping water echoed through the cavern.
The first creature they encountered was a Spinecrawler Beetle, a creature roughly the size of a large dog, with jagged, spiked legs and a glowing blue carapace.

"Finally," Enara said, her hands already glowing with dark fire. "A chance to show off."
She launched a ball of dark flames at the creature. The beetle screeched, its glowing shell cracking under the impact, but it didn't fall immediately.
"Your turn!" Enara called.
Liria sighed, raising her sword. A quick swipe and a burst of her Ember Swipe ability finished the creature off.
[You have defeated a Spinecrawler Beetle. Experience gained: 5.]
"Well, that was underwhelming," Liria muttered.
"You're welcome," Enara said smugly, brushing imaginary dust off her hands.
They moved deeper into the dungeon, encountering more creatures, including Glowfang Rats oversized rodents with luminous teeth and Shadow Sprites, small, ethereal beings that darted through the air like angry wisps.

The fights were easy but tiring. By the time they reached what appeared to be a larger chamber, Liria was already questioning Enara's definition of "fun."
"This must be the main area," Enara said, surveying the space.
The room was vast, with a high ceiling and strange, glowing runes etched into the walls. At its center was a dark pool of water that rippled ominously, though no wind stirred the air.
[This feels like the part where something big and ugly jumps out,] the System noted.
You think?
Before Liria could voice her concerns, the surface of the pool began to bubble.
"Uh… Enara?"
"What?" Enara turned, her expression lighting up with excitement as the water erupted, revealing a massive, twisted creature that looked like a cross between a serpent and a bat.
"Well," Enara said with a grin, her hands lighting up with flames, "now it's getting interesting."
The creature that rose from the pool was monstrous. Its body was sleek and wet, scales glistening like black obsidian, while its wings, veined and leathery, stretched out wide enough to scrape the cavern walls. A pair of glowing yellow eyes fixed on Liria and Enara, unblinking and predatory.
The air seemed to grow heavier as the creature let out a low, guttural hiss.

[Oh, look at that. You've found the bonus boss. Congratulations, you're about to die.]
Not helping, Liria shot back mentally, her grip tightening on her sword.
"Okay," Enara said, her voice tinged with an unusual seriousness as she took a step back. "Maybe this isn't as F-rank as I thought."
"Gee, you think?" Liria hissed, her eyes darting between the Wyrmling and the cavern's exit.
The creature let out a deafening roar, its wings unfurling in a display of dominance. A ripple of power surged through the air, forcing both girls to brace themselves.
