Chapter 21: Geting used to it
Chapter 21: Geting used to it
"Of course I'm ready!"
Despite the complete darkness that enveloped us as soon as we extinguished the fire, I'm still somehow able to discern most of the objects. Even if still terrain like trees or the ground can be a little fuzzy, as soon as something moves, I will be able to swiftly notice it.
"Good, follow me then!"
Not even checking if I moved, Eve jumps into a run. Whispering something while holding her left hand near her lips, her left palm suddenly brightens up like a torch!
While the light can prove helpful soon, I'm not sure if it gives us a proper advantage. The human eye adapts to the level of the brightest object in the surrounding. If Even keeps this light, we won't be able to notice anything amiss even while walking right into the trap!
With every step that we take, our legs are working faster and faster, just as if we were some heavy machines that need their own momentum to pick up the pace. In a few moments, I have to strain myself to even follow the girl!
"Blop!"
"Acquired running ability!"
Ah, it's just you Bonger, you have to make me remember about your existence instead of enjoying my lovely jog with a beautiful girl? How considerate of you!
While I think I could turn those notifications down somehow, I still want to hear them, no matter how annoying they get. Maybe while doing some mundane chore, I will level up corresponding ability? Looking at the awesome effects of the blacksmithing, I can't wait to check what kind of awesome buffs would a cleaning ability provide!
"We are close!"
After what seemed like an eternity, Eve slows down and signals me to do the same. Taking the light out with a soft blow to her hand, she closes her eyes and bends her knees. After a few moments, she finally moves forward in short strides.
"There they are"
Extending her arm, she points out at the group of four demonic beasts, cuddling together under the fallen tree. Their looks bring me the idea of genetically modified cats from the earth, with their fluffiness and cuteness improved by the same amount as their size. Don't be mistaken though! They are widely known as killer cats here, thanks to their insane mobility and lethality of their attacks!
"Would you mind leaving them all to me? If I don't expose myself to at least a tiny threat, I won't be able to break through my mental limits!"
Bullshitiing my way towards the solo action, I look at Eve with upturned eyes.
"Sigh Ok. If I notice anything amiss, don't blame for helping you! Imagine what would sect master do to me if a person I'm guiding around ended up hurt in such a lowly area!"
Ugh, so that's what she's so worried about! Well, I can't blame her. It's obvious that I'm taking advantage of her kindness, but I can't stop myself. Come on, if you were in my place, received a levelling system and crafter an insane weapon, would you be able to keep your enthusiasm down? I bet all of you would jump at the first opportunity to grind some XP!
But her approval opens a door for improvement for me. As soon as her head starts falling down to nod, I start moving forward. Starting at a distance of over forty meters away, I need to get close enough to guarantee at least one kill with my initial slash! But it's not as easy as it would seem!
With every step that closes the gap between me and my prey also means that those cats might be woken up by a strange smell. With the still air of the forest, I have to way to circulate around them to find a place with wind flowing in my direction. When I reach barely twenty meters away, one of the beasts suddenly raises his head!
Damn! I won't get any closer!
Left with no choice, I whip out my sword from storage ring and immediately slash in the direction of the cat!
Bpufffy
It seems that the fluffiness that those cats flaunt everyone with isn't just a bait for animals lovers like me! Looking at how my wind-wave barely pushes the monsters away, I can only be satisfied with the one cut, slowly bleeding out on the ground!
"Blop!"
"The first requirement for Executioner (high class) path achieved. Please proceed to defeat an enemy stronger that host's level to fully clear the requirements and unlock said path!"
What?
This system message distracts me for a moment, but my earlier experiences allowed me to outright ignore this ringing in my ears. Focusing my full attention at the demonic cats, I see all of them dashing in to run in three different directions!
Unbothered by this situation, I simply slash to my left and right respectively. In less than a second, another two enemies are down! With the last one, the one charging right at me - I will be able to flaunt how I singlehandedly cleared out the demonic monster's nest!
Even if my slashes were fast, the remaining cat wasn't slow either. By the time I was ready to slash again, the beast already arrived right before me! Crossing the twenty meters gap could be done in less than two seconds on earth, so if this animal wouldn't be able to beat this record despite all the resources that it was bound to digest through its whole life, it would be a failure of a living being!
Ready to sacrifice some of my HP to test out my hypothesis, I extend my hand to grab the beast in the midair. Despite all the scratches that instantly appear on my arm, I watch the status window display my health staying the same for all the time that this beast attacks me.
I guess the resistance stat applies to the physical damage as well!
Unable to be bothered anymore with the struggling beast, I use my sword to cut its head off.
"Blop!"
"Host has levelled up!"
YES! finally! Killing the last monster finally overflowed my XP tank and raised my level by a single digit! While this is an awesome gift for me, I can't even focus on it as something else grabs my attention.
Maybe because this is the first time that my blade actually soaks in the blood of the killed enemy, but I could bet a strange light appeared on it!
"Are you done here?"
Before I even manage to sort things out, Eve comes out of her previous hideout. Considering her nonchalant and relaxed attitude, there are no other monsters in the direct proximity to us.
"Their carcasses are worthless. Don't even bother butchering them, I hear their meat tastes like shit. Shall we go for another nest? Maybe we could find something more interesting there!"
