The Earth After Rebirth

Chapter 434 To the Heart of the Mine

They could see in the dark yes but seeing the blood and the dead bodies draped by the sunlight was somehow unsettling.

Growing a conscience upon seeing the dead bodies who were also just doing whatever they can so their families survived the cruelty that was their society. While the conscience was there, they didn't exactly feel bad about what had to be done.

They were saving people at the end, the only difference between the guards and the slaves was choice.

"The smell is almost unbearable, good thing I haven't eaten since yesterday." Jesús joked trying to brighten up the mood.

"Did we really fight the entire night? Isn't that insane?" Grey retorted unable to laugh it off.

They hadn't realised the mess they'd made in the night, the walls were completely painted red with blood and they were chipped by the many stray bullets that failed to hit their target.

"I'm tired as a dog, I just want us to be done with this. I hope there's no one else waiting for us at the mouth of the mine. I don't know how many kills in me I have left." Sekani said his piece, they were doing this for the good of their society but he felt like it was taking too much of who he was.

He was leading them with Nikolai by his side, when he saw him he thought of his own sons. He wouldn't forgive himself if anything else happened to him, which is why he made himself his personal unofficial guard.

Sekani swore to himself that he would not grow attached and personal in this mission but now, it was already too late.

Like many of them here, he couldn't wait to get home but at the same he never wanted to reach home. He never in his wildest dreams thought this operation would take an entire day and night.

If he'd told Freya what they were going to do, she would absolutely forbid him to go. He now understood why his own son didn't tell them anything about the underground ring. He admitted even to himself that he wouldn't have allowed Kiro to do what he was doing.

It was hypocritical, but that's what it was to be a parent. His stomach was doing somersaults just thinking about Freya's reaction when he got home a day later. It would even be worse when she found out what he was doing.

'Will she look at me differently?' He thought to himself a little concerned, he was definitely a little bit changed by the experience of fighting other human beings to the death.

He shook his head, this wasn't the time for that. He couldn't afford himself getting distracted like this when they were all in the battlefield, in the middle of a war. They were still far from safe.

The place was bigger than they initially felt it was, while they were busy fighting it wasn't something they noticed immediately. It was also dark, cold and creepy, Sekani being at the front was ready for anything to pounce out of every corner they passed.

They all jumped in their boots when really someone came from the shadows. Suddenly they threw themselves to the people at the forefront, luckily they didn't have a gun on them just a large knife.

While Sekani was ready for this, it was very hard to defend against when he first had to shove Nikolai out of harms way, he put up his forearm, certain that it was too late to do anything else.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

The people at the back hadn't expected this either, the ambush was pretty good but there was only one guy. Wilfred could've reacted much faster but unfortunately he was still carrying James, it took him exactly two seconds to grab his gun.

But the two seconds were enough for the attacker to inflict damage that he laid in wait for. Sekani could feel every nerve on his forearms gladly open up for the sharp knife, it went through his skin like a hot knife slicing white butter. The only thing that stopped the knife from completely severing his arm was the bone.

He wanted to howl in pain but held it in, he punch the guard senseless. The young guard darted backwards, not having expected someone with such an injury to pack that much power in their punch.

He was far enough from Sekani, Wilfred didn't even need to move an inch as he fire a single shot. The laser bullet sped in the air, missing Sekani by a hair's breadth and pierce the guard right through between his eyes, there was a tiny hole only those watching could see.

His mouth hung open, he was clearly about to say something but the words died in his throat when he was met with his fate. He fell with a loud thud.

Wilfred gently put James down and ran to Sekani. He hadn't seen where he was stabbed but he was certain that he was stabbed, the worry he felt in that moment was indescribable.

"Sir, Master Waynworth, are you alright sir?" He screamed before he could even reach him.

Sekani held out his injured arm to calm Wilfred down. Though that did little to calm his nerves because he could tell just how deep the knife had dug into his skin.

"I'll be alright Wilfred, James is your responsibility now please don't leave his side." They'd all came close to death one way or another, the time to panic wasn't now.

"You're my responsibility Sir, everything else, even my life, comes second."

"That's no way to live Wilfred..."

"It's the truth Sir."

"Then, I'll order you to stay by James' side. I can take care of myself." He hated himself for being this kind of boss but it needed to be done, his voice wavered for only but a second but as he went on it hardened. "That boy needs you more than I do, go Wilfred."

The butler was reluctant but disobeying a direct order was even worse than not doing his job properly so he went back to his post.

Nikolai was starting to get up from the ground, Sekani ran to his side and offered him help which he gladly took.

"Sorry, I didn't know what else—"

Nikolai hugged him.
