Chapter 170: Chapter 0164: Didn’t See This OneNôv(el)B\\jnn
Six surgeries were scheduled in one day, marking the end of restful days as the integrated orthopedics department officially entered busy mode.
Yang Ping had already done some training on arthroscopic shoulder surgery in the system, but he wanted further training on some of the more difficult procedures.
With 11,000 points left from the task rewards and 10,000 points accumulated from daily rewards, Yang Ping used a total of 21,000 points to purchase special training for 500 multi-directional shoulder instability reconstructions and 100 shoulder cuff repairs. He planned to strengthen training on these two surgeries.
All six surgeries were arthroscopic. Without enough arthroscopic equipment, this load would be impossible. Thankfully, Sanbo Hospital had plenty of arthroscopic equipment, which could handle a few more surgeries.
Some hospitals only have a few sets of equipment. After use, they have to be sterilized for several hours before they can be used again. At Sanbo, this is not a problem.
In the integrated orthopedics department’s independent operating room, the digital screen of the surgery schedule displayed six surgeries for the first time. All surgeries were labeled as “Under Arthroscope,” which was very comforting to see.
The first patient, Zhang Lin’s, was sent to the operating room on time at 8:30. Fatty was already administering anesthesia to him. It was a meniscal suturing surgery, and the anesthesia was a routine nerve block.
Director Han called on his colleagues from the marketing department to shoot promotional videos. Dressed in visitor’s coats and carrying video cameras, they captured various shots under Director Han’s guidance.
Director Han planned to play a loop of cutting-edge surgeries such as multi-ligament reconstructions of the knee joint and multi-directional instability reconstructions of the shoulder joint on the large television in the family waiting area outside the operating room.
The promotional video needed to be impressive, with a blockbuster feel to leave a strong impression on viewers. It needed to make it clear that our team, our equipment, and our surgeries were all top-tier.
Director Han would occasionally stop to communicate with his colleagues from the marketing department. He taught them how to capture certain details to demonstrate to the viewers and what effects to achieve.
Huang Jiahui was very excited. The success of Sanbo’s arthroscopic surgeries meant more use of her consumables. It indicated her job performance would take a major leap forward. As a newcomer, nothing was more delightful than seeing a daily increase in business volume.
If this pace continued, her monthly business volume might be in the top ranks of the company’s business hero board, attracting attention from others.
She had already prepared the consumables—neatly stacked—by the side. She was so pleased she forgot she was just recovering from a cold and would easily break out in sweat with a little move.
Upon receiving the news, Director Gao decided to let his subordinates perform the surgeries. Instead, he came to the operating room early on. When it came to learning, one had to take action and not merely talk about it. One must treasure the learning opportunities provided by such an outstanding medical expert in one’s own hospital.
Such pragmatism freed people from many worries and provided them with many opportunities. Director Gao was such a person. He didn’t care too much about keeping face; learning was the paramount objective.
Before Yang Ping arrived, he was already wandering around the operating room, sometimes observing the case files on the lightbox, sometimes examining the patient’s joint, and sometimes sitting in the corner. Not being able to withstand the loneliness, he would occasionally ask Zhang Lin about the patient’s medical history.
Huang Jiahui was relatively new in the field, and she was only familiar with the doctors from the integrated orthopedics department at Sanbo. As her company’s products had never been used by the sports medicine department, naturally, she did not recognize Director Gao.
Feeling bored, Director Gao picked up one of her instrument boxes and checked it: “Ruixing? Is it domestically made?”
“Yes, sir, it is a domestic brand. We—”Jiahui eagerly began to introduce it. She believed addressing everyone as a teacher was the right thing to do.
Director Gao waved his hand, showing no interest in listening to her introduction. He was aware of the quality of domestic products. Not only were they imitations, but they were also crudely made without much attention.
Just as Jiahui was about to delve into her introduction, she was rudely interrupted by Director Gao. The embarrassment was hardly noticeable, thanks to the face mask she was wearing.
“I’m familiar with your products. Your meniscus guns are infamous for getting jammed, and your locators don’t work well. They are often inaccurate. Is Dr. Yang using all of your products for surgery today?” Director Gao glanced around the operating room and noticed no other manufacturer’s representatives present except this young lady.
Jiahui politely replied: “Dr. Yang has always used our products.”
“Did he use your products for the previous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery as well?” Director Gao asked, unable to believe it.
Jiahui nodded: “Yes, and for the previous meniscus suturing surgery as well. All our products.”
Director Gao typically used products from Shi Lehui and Arthrex, and sometimes those from Johnson & Johnson. But Dr. Yang was using domestic products? What was the rationale behind it? Could it be that domestic products were more suited for these difficult surgeries?
There must be some inside information. Could it be that this young lady had a special relationship with Yang Ping? These days, nothing seemed impossible. This girl was quite a beauty and had an appealing appearance. Director Gao’s gaze on Huang Jiahui left her feeling a little awkward.
Director Gao thought again. Yang Ping didn’t seem like the type to do such things, besides, he seemed to be dating nurse Xiao Su from the operating room. Was he sneaking around under her nose?
Before dealing with Yang Ping, Director Gao had already asked the younger doctors about him. It was better to understand the situation before dealing with him, like not casually criticizing nurse Xiao Su from the operating room.
No, Yang Ping was not that kind of person. There must be some hidden advantages to these domestic instruments that most people were unaware of. This young man had probably discovered them, and they might be more suited for complex surgeries.
“Dr. Yang!” Yang Ping walked in, followed by Song Zimo. Director Gao immediately greeted him.
“Director Gao!” The two shook hands.
In order to link things tightly, two operating rooms were used alternately. When Zhang Lin’s patient was nearly done, Little Five’s patient would start the anesthesia, positioning, sterilization and draping process. This way, as soon as the first surgery was completed, one could get changed, scrub their hands again and continue. This approach saved time.
“Doctor Yang? Do you prefer domestically produced?” Director Gao tentatively asked.
Yang Ping casually replied, “Domestically produced models are more suitable for the anatomical data of our population.”
Indeed, there was a secret trick to this; a suitable model would allow for more precision in operation. Director Gao said to Huang Jiahui, “Prepare some of your instruments at our hospital’s surgical center too, for shoulder joints, knee joints, all of them. I will use them when the time comes.”
“Alright, thank you, teacher!” Jiahui couldn’t believe her ears. Her company’s instruments were rarely used in that hospital and most of them were left to nearly expire in the warehouse after a long time.
“Spare some time to deliver the goods to Director Gao when you’re free.” Yang Ping instructed as he checked the preparation of the medical supplies.
“Right! Prepare a variety of them!” Director Gao laughed and joined them in checking the supplies.
Song Zimo was washing his hands, and Yang Ping was examining the medical images. Yang Ping only began to wash his hands after Song Zimo helped Zhang Lin with the sterilization and draping process.
Director Gao sat in the corner, observing coldly. It was amusing to see the usually proud Song Zimo acting like such a cheerful follower around Yang Ping.
The first surgery procedure begun as usual; it was a basic meniscus suture surgery. Director Gao stood up as he was interested to see if the domestic instruments would fail at some point.
The surgery proceeded swiftly. In less than fifteen minutes, it was completed. The suture gun did not jam; a few shots of it and the meniscus was seamlessly stitched up, it was all very smooth. The meniscus was stitched up beautifully.
Zhang Lin was left to wrap things up and transfer the patient, while Yang Ping and Song Zimo took off their surgical gloves, washed their hands and got ready for the next surgery in the adjacent room, where anesthesia had already been administered and Little Five had prepared the position of the patient.
The anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery took roughly thirty minutes to complete, and then it was off to the next operating room. Director Gao was moved around these operating rooms until he almost got dizzy.
Afterward, surgeries like knee cleanup and shoulder joint labral injuries were even easier. When it came to the shoulder cuff repair, Director Gao thought it would take at least an hour to complete.
To his surprise, the surgery was over before he knew it. The anchor was in place, the shoulder cuff all stitched up and it was done. This procedure was done so skillfully it was as if it was second nature. Wherever did this young surgeon get such good skills from, wondered Director Gao, it startled him indeed.
These domestically produced medical instruments worked surprisingly well. They were so handy that Director Gao asked Huang Jiahui, “Please prepare more of these, just like what Doctor Yang used today.”
After watching the shoulder cuff repair procedure, he realized that Little Five was still stitching up the skin. Director Gao’s stomach started to grumble, and he felt a bit uncomfortable. Realizing that there would be enough time since the multi-directional unstable shoulder joint surgery was up next and regardless of how fast they were, he went to the restroom in the changing room to relieve himself.
Having squatted there for about ten minutes, he felt relieved. He then went to the break room to have a glass of warm water to soothe his stomach. Counting the time, it had been around a half hour, the surgery should be in its early stages, so he went back into the operating room to observe.
To his surprise, when he entered, Zhang Lin was helping the patient put on slippers and was preparing to send the patient back to the ward. Caught off guard, Director Gao tentatively asked Zhang Lin, “Zhang, the multi-directional unstable shoulder joint reconstruction, isn’t that the next surgery?”
Zhang Lin glanced at him and if it weren’t for the fact that it was the director, any other young doctor would have retorted on the spot questioning whether he didn’t see himself or didn’t understand. The surgery was already done and he was asking if it was next. Was this a proper way to queue for surgical observation?
“That was it. It’s done,” Zhang Lin replied.
“Done?” said Director Gao between tears and laughter. He had taken time out of his schedule specifically to learn about this surgery. He had seen several surgeries in succession, and the only one he missed was this one. Wasn’t this a pretty big pitfall?
Seeing the look of frustration on his face, Zhang Lin thought to himself, “If it’s not done, we would still be waiting for you, wouldn’t we?”
He didn’t see Yang Ping or Song Zimo anywhere.
“Where is Dr. Yang?” asked Director Gao.
“He left, went back to the ward!” Zhang Lin replied courteously, out of respect for his director.
“What about the video, can I get a copy to take back with me?” Director Gao suddenly remembered that there was video of the surgery.
“It’s from our own department, there’s no need for formalities. Feel free to take one!” Zhang Lin helped the patient up and prepared to take him back to the ward.
Director Gao walked over to the computer beside the video system. He didn’t know how to operate it; usually, the lower-ranked doctors did this work. Today, he had come here alone without bringing anyone along with him.
In the blink of an eye, he was the only one left in the operating room. Those who were heading back to the ward had already left, and those washing the instruments went to do so.
“Xiao Chen, it’s Director Gao. Come to the Comprehensive Orthopedics operating room quickly. Yes, right now, hurry up!”
After hanging up the phone, Director Gao sat and waited.
