Chapter 38 Trouble Ahead
Xiao Han's mouth corners lifted slightly in a strange smile.
From their movements, he could tell that the guys trailing him were likely not very formidable. Weighing his options, he was confident he could handle them.
Keeping his pace steady, Xiao Han walked to the edge of the road, deliberately choosing a spot good for observation. The streetlight was at his 8 o'clock on the left. If they approached from that direction, their silhouettes would betray them. Otherwise, they would likely end up within Xiao Han's field of vision.
One minute later, several sneaky shadows indeed appeared.
Xiao Han's mouth corners lifted slightly.
"Big Fatty, you go first!" Jiang Xiaoliang gritted his teeth.
"Alright." The big and dumb one nodded promptly, swinging the brick in his hand and rapidly lunging at Xiao Han.
Xiao Han could determine the other's trajectory and speed from the way their figure moved.
Bang…
Just as the other was about to smash the brick in his hand down, Xiao Han suddenly executed a Dragon Tail Whip. His foot landed solidly on Big Fatty's chest.
"Ouch..." Big Fatty fell straight down.
At that moment, Jiang Xiaoliang and another boy also quickly charged out of the greenery.
"Xiao Han, eat this brick from me!" Jiang Xiaoliang roared furiously.
"Hmph!" Xiao Han snorted coldly.
With a flick of his foot, a brick on the ground flipped up neatly and landed on Xiao Han's foot.
"Eat this brick from me." Xiao Han kicked fiercely.
Boom!
The brick on his foot soared through the air, hitting Jiang Xiaoliang square in the face.
"Ow..." Jiang Xiaoliang immediately crouched down, clutching his face.
The other boy stopped abruptly, asking anxiously, "Xiaoliang, are… are you okay?"
"Damn, my... my teeth!" Jiang Xiaoliang covered his mouth, blood gushing forth.
Xiao Han walked over coldly, chuckling, "Jiang Xiaoliang, I didn't expect it to be you."
"Xiao Han, you… you knocked out my teeth," Jiang Xiaoliang cursed angrily.
"But this was your ambush on me," Xiao Han mockingly replied. "You brought this on yourself."
"I… I'm going to report you to the school," Jiang Xiaoliang glared furiously at Xiao Han.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
"Be my guest!" Xiao Han laughed coldly.
Having said this, Xiao Han hailed a cab and left the scene. Big Fatty and the other boy hurriedly supported Jiang Xiaoliang to get his wound treated at the hospital. One of his front teeth was knocked out, and the bleeding wouldn't stop.
Back at home, Xiao Han was somewhat worried.
Jiang Xiaoliang came from a wealthy family, and as an only child, he was doted on like a treasure. Suddenly seeing their son with a knocked out tooth, Xiao Han guessed this could spell trouble. His heart was a little troubled, unsure of how to face this tomorrow.
Given Jiang Xiaoliang's nature, the guy would probably shift all the blame onto Xiao Han. Even if Xiao Han explained the truth, who would believe him? There were no surveillance cameras on that street, nor any passing pedestrians to witness the event.
Just as Xiao Han expected.
Early the next day, Xiao Han went to school with his backpack.
At the school gates, many pointed at Xiao Han and whispered among themselves.
"That's him, that's Xiao Han!"
"The kid is done for, he actually knocked out Jiang Xiaoliang's front teeth. How brutal."
"Now the entire school knows that the head of the academic affairs office is looking for him."
Many looked at Xiao Han with sympathetic eyes. Jiang Xiaoliang was Linjiang No.1 Middle School's top student, while Xiao Han was seen as an inferior student; one exam of excellence couldn't change the students' perception of Xiao Han. So, the incident of Xiao Han knocking out Jiang Xiaoliang's teeth was largely seen as Xiao Han's fault by everyone.
"Xiao Han, you're in trouble," Li Dapang hurried over anxiously.
"What happened?" Xiao Han asked quickly.
"First thing this morning, the school broadcast was calling for you, telling you to go to the academic affairs office as soon as you could," Li Dapang said urgently.
"Why?" Xiao Han was puzzled.
Who else could pressure the school and stir up such a storm but him? Xiao Han quickly had an idea.
"And you're asking me for what trouble you've caused?" Li Dapang looked at Xiao Han and said, "Did you really knock out Jiang Xiaoliang's front tooth?"
"He provoked me," Xiao Han said with a cold face.
"Fuck, that kid is spreading rumors everywhere, saying you're jealous of his academic performance and attacked him on your own initiative." Li Dapang spoke up, "This messes things up for you; couldn't you just hold back? What good is injuring him for you?"
"What's done is done; what can I do?" Xiao Han said helplessly.
"What are we going to do now?" Li Dapang was getting anxious. He said, "If you're hauled into the academic affairs office, you're going to be disciplined."
"Then let them discipline me," Xiao Han laughed. "What can they do about it?"
"Aren't you afraid of that stern-faced director over at academic affairs?" Li Dapang glared at Xiao Han.
"Forget it," Xiao Han waved his hand dismissively, "Director Zhang should be a reasonable person. I'm going to the academic affairs office now to clarify things."
"I think you'd better not go," Li Dapang urged him quickly, "Isn't that just walking into a trap? This time, Jiang Xiaoliang's parents have already made a scene at the school and put pressure on them. Otherwise, do you think this issue would have blown up so much?"
"So what am I supposed to do?" Xiao Han shuddered inwardly. That kid Jiang Xiaoliang really went all out by dragging his parents into this.
"How about this, take a sick leave for today," Li Dapang said in a hurry, "Once his mom and dad are gone, we'll calm things down."
Xiao Han shook his head, "You might evade temporarily, but not for a lifetime. I still have to face this, to stand up like a man."
Having said that, Xiao Han headed straight for the academic affairs office.
Li Dapang watched Xiao Han's retreating figure, his transformation somewhat unbelievable to him. Did this kid really say that? Not only talking like a real man but acting like one too. Looking at Xiao Han's retreating figure, Li Dapang gave a thumbs-up and said, "That's a real man."
Academic Affairs.
Inside the office, smoke swirled.
Zhang Daguo was a veteran smoker with over forty years of addiction. Sitting across from him were Jiang Xiaoliang's parents, two respectable-looking business people. Having made some money in business in earlier years and some profitable investments since, they held some prestige in LJ City.
Now that their son had suffered such a big loss, they naturally couldn't let it slide and came to the school themselves to demand an explanation.
"Oh, Brother Jiang, kids squabble, why do you have to get involved as well?" Zhang Daguo said with a chuckle.
"Xiaoliang is our only son," Jiang Xiaoliang's father, Jiang Yicai, said coldly, "My son gets bullied at school, of course, I have to come to you guys."
"We need to figure out the whole story here," Zhang Daguo responded with a smile.
"What story?" Jiang Yicai said hastily, "My son explained it quite clearly. That bully from his class is jealous of his good grades, and also because he sits with that... Chen Zihan. That's why he secretly attacked him and knocked out his teeth."
"We will investigate the matter thoroughly," Zhang Daguo smiled, "If that's the case, we will certainly record a major demerit for Xiao Han."
"Director Zhang," Madam Jiang interjected with a cold laugh, "Just a demerit for beating someone up like this?"
"So what do you suggest?" Zhang Daguo asked with puzzlement.
"Expulsion!" Madam Jiang's voice became unusually sharp and a bit harsh, "He must be expelled, to ensure he can never go to school again!"
"That…" Zhang Daguo was taken aback, saying awkwardly, "Expulsion is a serious matter; it requires the principal's approval, and we have to file it with the Education Bureau. It's not something we can just decide. I can't make this decision."
"Then find someone who can make the decision to talk to us!" Madam Jiang's acidic tone pushed Zhang Daguo into an indefensible corner.
The atmosphere in the office grew tense for a moment.
Just then, Xiao Han pushed open the door and walked in.
"Xiao Han?" Zhang Daguo spotted Xiao Han immediately, his anger rising, "You, come in quickly and explain the whole situation clearly!"
Xiao Han, hands pocketed, strolled in.
Madam Jiang fixed a fiery gaze on Xiao Han, "Are you Xiao Han? You're the one who knocked out my son's front teeth?"
"Director Zhang, let me tell you the whole story now," Xiao Han completely ignored Madam Jiang's question and recited last night's events in full detail.
Upon hearing this, Madam Jiang nearly erupted in rage. She had been completely brainwashed by her son's account, her perception already biased. She snapped, "You mean to say that I should have my son apologize to you?"
"Forget about the apology," Xiao Han waved it off, "I'm not one to hold grudges."
Bang!
Suddenly, Jiang Yicai slammed his hand on the desk, sneering, "Young but not modest!"
Xiao Han turned to look at Jiang Yicai, neatly dressed in a white shirt paired with a gray vest, a gold chain hanging around his neck. Despite his meticulous attire, it was hard to conceal the air of a nouveau riche about him.
"Like father, like son!" Xiao Han retorted without hesitation.
"Enough!" Zhang Daguo quickly jumped in to mediate, then turned to Xiao Han, "Is what you just said true?"
"Not a word of it was false," Xiao Han nodded.
"Do you have any evidence?" Zhang Daguo asked.
"Well…" Xiao Han hesitated for a moment, then said, "There was no surveillance on the roadside, and no eyewitnesses."
"Who would believe you based on your word alone?" Madam Jiang's sharp voice rang out again.
"Who would believe your son?" Xiao Han shot back.
"My son has excellent grades; plenty of people would believe him," Madam Jiang coldly mocked Xiao Han, "As for you, just a poor student at the bottom of the class. If you don't study hard and only daydream all day. You, a poor boy, are destined to stay poor forever!"
