Chapter 223: Locust Plague

The next day, Yao Ran was awakened by a loud noise outside. It sounded like thousands of flies swarming above the building. The buzzing sounds gave her a headache and a sense of foreboding.

Getting up from her bamboo cot, Yao Ran went to the window and opened the curtain slightly. Noticing it was still dark outside, she opened it wider and took out her night vision binoculars.

Looking through the binoculars, Yao Ran scanned the area but couldn't find the source of the buzzing sounds. Just as she was about to find Long Yu and ask if he knew the cause, she saw something in the distance.

On the horizon, a black cloud seemed to be drawing closer. As far as she knew, the acid rain wouldn't arrive for months. Yao Ran frowned slightly, adjusted the binoculars for a better look, and looked at the black cloud.

At first, she thought it was an approaching acid rain cloud. However, as she zoomed in, she realized that it was not a cloud, and her pupils shrunk in surprise.

She quickly picked up her walkie-talkie and said, "Everyone, wake up! The locusts are coming! Close all doors and windows, and check the ventilation!"

A few seconds after sending the warning, Long Yu's voice came from the walkie-talkie, "Roger that."

Shi Xuan's hoarse voice soon followed, "Got it."

After warning her friends, Yao Ran raised her binoculars again and looked into the distance. Wherever the locusts passed, everything edible disappeared.

As she watched the locusts closing in, sirens began blaring from outside.

A few seconds later, she heard the new building manager shouting through a megaphone, "The locusts are coming! Close all doors and windows! Wake up! The Locust are coming!"

The building manager repeated the words, but the buzzing sounds were too loud, drowning out his voice. He shouted a few more times and quickly closed the window.

Although the residents of other buildings could not clearly hear his warning, the people living in Building 3 woke up and heard it.

Everyone who had survived until now was highly vigilant. The moment the building manager's warning went out, people hurriedly shut their windows and doors and then drew their curtains to keep any locusts from entering.

A few minutes later, the locusts arrived in Juncheng City. Yao Ran watched as the sky darkened, with millions of locusts blocking out the rising sun and consuming everything in their path.

When the locusts reached the Ling Yuan apartment complex, they hit the windows like bullets.

Yao Ran watched them collide with the tempered glass outside her balcony and took a closer look. The locusts were twice the size of ordinary ones but otherwise looked the same, except for sharper fangs.

While she observed them, she suddenly heard the sound of shattering glass, followed by screams from downstairs.

After a moment, Long Yu's voice came through. "I just spoke with Quan Yuanwei. He said the locusts broke through the windows and are attacking the survivors."

Yao Ran fell into silence, realizing there wasn't much she could do. She looked at the giant locusts hitting the tempered glass and said, "Understood."

The sudden arrival of the locust plague shocked the military, the survivors, and even Yao Ran herself.

In her previous life, she had spent four years in Haicheng City before traveling around the country to do missions with her teammates.
