In a VIP ward of the city hospital.
Song Zhizhi found Song Shan lying down on a hospital bed. She quickly asked, “How are you feeling, Dad?”
“I’m just feeling a little dizzy from the blood pressure. Assistant Liu’s making a big fuss over nothing,” Song Shan said, “He only asked you to come over because there’s still some things at work that I need him to help me deal with, and he doesn’t feel comfortable leaving me alone in the hospital.”
“Dad, high blood pressure isn’t a minor issue. How many times have I told you? You must carefully control your blood pressure!” Song Zhizhi complained.
“Yes, yes, yes, I know,” Song Shan promised perfunctorily, then turned to Liu Zizhong and said, “You should go back. I’ll be fine with Zhizhi here.”
“Yes, Chief,” Liu Zizhong replied respectfully and left.
Song Zhizhi verified with her dad’s personal doctor that he really was just suffering from dizziness because of high blood pressure. Only after that did she feel more at ease. She suddenly thought of something and told Song Shan, “Dad, since we’re already here, let’s have you do a full body checkup just to be safe.”
“But I told you, I just did a checkup not that long ago.”
“Then let’s just do a routine blood test to see how high your cholesterol level is.
Look how fat you’ve gotten. Your cholesterol reading can’t be that good either.”
“Oh c’mon. You make me sound so unhealthy. I’m fine.”
“I won’t stop worrying about you if you don’t do it.”
“All right, all right,” Song Shan said, “I’ll listen to you.”
Song Zhizhi gave him a sweet smile. She quickly called for the doctor and nurses. The doctor did a series of tests on Song Shan, while the nurse drew several tubes of blood. Song Zhizhi secretly took one of the tubes and placed it inside her handbag.
Most of the test results came out in the afternoon. The condition of Song Shan’s body was not that bad except for some old issues. He just had to pay more attention to his health and he would be fine. Song Zhizhi then helped his father check out of the hospital.
When they returned to the Song residence, everyone else was in the living room. Nie Wenzhi was a little surprised to see Song Shan back so early. She quickly went up to him and asked gently, “Why have you left work early today, dear?”
“I’ve nmsnea everytmng 1 naa to ao, so 1 tnougnt I’ll come nome early. wnat are you discussing?” Song Shan changed the subject and asked. Song Shan actually had a bit of machismo, in that he generally would not speak of his own health issues with others.
“Oh, we’ve just received an invitation from the Xin Group for an engagement party between Xin He’s stepson Mu Cidian and the daughter of the number one fashion tycoon in Jin City, Wu Qianyuan. It’ll be held the day after tomorrow,” Nie Wenzhi said, “I was hoping Mom would attend it together with us to have some fun, but Mom said she’s going back to her house.”
Song Shan nodded and went over to Qin Ciling.
Qin Ciling told her son, “I’ve already stayed here for a number of days. It’s time to go back.”
“You still can’t get used to living here, Mom?” Song Shan asked with concern.
“That’s not exactly it. It’s just that, once you get old, you tend to prefer to live in the place where you were born and raised. Besides, this kind of banquet is not suitable for an old woman like me. You people go and have fun.”
Song Shan understood his mother’s preferrence, so he did not try to stop her, “In that case, let me drive you home later.”
“Okay,” Qin Ciling nodded. She then told Song Zhizhi a little uneasily, “Zhizhi, you’re the first daughter of the Song family, so before doing anything, you must keep the big picture in mind. Don’t do anything that will make your elders worry again. The glory of the Song family that was built throughout generations cannot be ruined in our times.”
“I understand, Grandma. Don’t worry,” Song Zhizhi dutifully replied.
Qin Ciling nodded in satisfaction and smiled benevolently, “In that case,
Grandma will say no more.”
The family spent a little more time together before Song Shan and Nie Wenzhi sent Qin Ciling home.
Looking at their backs, Song Zhizhi smiled coldly.
Nie Wenzhi did not gain anything at all by inviting Qin Ciling here this time. On the contrary, she caused a lot of trouble for herself.
Song Zhizhi turned around and went back to her room. She still had something important to do!
In the Xin family villa.
The Xin family business mainly involved real estate, including the construction of office buildings, residential buildings, commercial buildings, commercial districts, etc. They owned one of the three major conglomerates in Jin City, and had a long history and strong capital.
Xin Zaozao got up from bed after a nice long sleep.
She still felt really weak, but did not want to make her father worry.
Her love for her father was not particularly deep, but it was not shallow either. The situation of their family was rather common. Her parents’ marriage was an arranged political marriage with no feelings involved. Her father had always loved Wang Tsuen. After the sudden and unexpected death of Wang Tsuen’s husband, she came to her father, and her father divorced her mother. After the divorce, her mother did not want Xin Zaozao custody, and Xin Zaozao did not force the issue either. After all, it was a lot harder for a divorced woman to remarry if she brought a child along with her.
After the divorce, her mother left the country. She later remarried abroad and had other children of her own. She was currently living a stable life.
Occasionally, she would contact Xin Zaozao, but there was basically no love between them. She had lived with her father for many years, and her father was actually very good to her, so she did not hate him either.
It was hard to say who was right and who was wrong in the matter of love. Xin Zaozao had always understood this. Even though, for the longest time, she still harboured expectations for relationships, it had become almost paper thin after being hammered hard by reality.
She came downstairs just in time for dinner.
There was an extra person today – Mu Cidian’s fiancée, Wu Qianyuan. The marriage between the two could be considered a political marriage, but that did not mean they did not have feelings for each other. At least, Mu Cidian was very nice to Wu Qianyuan, and Wu Qianyuan was very happy with Mu Cidian.
That was why it took them only a few months to get engaged after they met one another.
Xin Zaozao walked down casually.
“You’re awake, Zaozao,” Wu Qianyuan was friendly towards her.
Xin Zaozao returned the smile. “Yeah. I slept all afternoon.”
“You sure can sleep,” Xin He made a doting remark. “You’re just in time for dinner.”
Everyone then went to the dining room and sat around the table. They usually ate well, and with Wu Qianyuan there, the food today was even better.
Xin Zaozao ate her meal in silence.
She heard Wang Tsuen’s enthusiastic voice say, “Eat more, Qianyuan. Look how thin you are. Here, have some more nourishing chicken soup. Cidian specifically ordered the kitchen staff to prepare this for you.”
Wu Qianyuan showed her a gentle smile, “Thank you, Auntie.”
Wang Tsuen placed more food on Wu Qianyuan’s plate. The relationship between this pair of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law looked harmonious.
Xin Zaozao felt indifferent looking at it.
In this family, she sometimes felt like she was redundant.
She continued eating in silence when a slender hand reached across in front of her and took her soup bowl, “You should drink some chicken soup too if you’re not feeling well.”
Xin Zaozao lifted her head and saw Mu Cidian calmly helping her scoop some soup into her bowl.
However, she was no longer the little girl who would smile whenever she was given a little candy.
But she did not refuse, and she even said thank you. However, throughout dinner, she did not touch the bowl of chicken soup.
Of course, no one else would notice..
