Chapter 63 Guard duty
63 Guard duty
—Boom
The body of a bruised and beaten man fell to the floor of a large courtyard. Upon closer inspection, the young man seemed to have a broken oval blue mask on his face and his robes were torn and tattered.
"Hmp!! Embarrassing" Floating right above the young man, an older gentleman with a white goatee, a bald head and gray robes snorted.
He was the master of the man who had fought Arian during the faceless mercenary test and right now, he was annoyed. after so many resources and sacrifices, he was able to force one of his disciples to enter level 3. Qualifying him to enter the faceless mercenary company's high ranks.
But, now out of nowhere, some random kid appears and destroys his chance.....it was vexing.
"Maybe I've been too soft on all of you…." The bald-headed elder sneered, he then took out his faceless mask and placed it on his face.
They were too use to luxurious lives, he needed to strengthen them, so they could handle themselves properly.

He looked to the sky and flew off in a particular direction.

Meanwhile,
"Joining a faction will not only improve your living conditions, it will also create a better environment for your training, and if you're in Duan City for wealth, we will provide a good number of high-quality missions with big pays.....what do you think?"
In the now closed restaurant where Leon had taken his faceless mercenary test, Leon, Arian, and the waiter, who they later found out was called Darknorth stood.
Leon had come over to familiarize himself with the workings of the faceless mercenary company, and Darknorth took the opportunity to try to poach him and Arian to his faction.
"Hehe, there's a need to understand the workings of the company before making decisions, right?" Leon replied, he was a bit skeptical about this faction thing because, he had no inclination to remain loyal to any group.
"I understand, but you don't have that much time. You have to find one before the month's end because, the tempering event will be held by the end of this month" Darknorth said.
The tempering event was an event for new members of the faceless mercenary company. It didn't seem like it, but the mercenary company was very powerful in duan city and had a lot of resources at their disposal.
Even with the happenings in the city, they would still organize their tempering events to help their new members advance in strength. When Leon first heard about it, he was very excited.
A chance to strengthen himself was a golden opportunity, he felt very inadequate being a level 1 warlock. He needed to break through. Of course, this was easier said than done.
It would be neigh impossible for a beginner stage Level 1 warlock like himself to break through during the tempering event that was meant for mages.
However, Leon had a trick up his sleeve. He just needed to get to that point.
"Okay, can I take a look at some missions?" Leon looked over at a signboard behind the counter of the restaurant and asked.
Normally, this board would display items on the menu for the restaurant, but since it was still closed, there were missions placed on them instead. n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
"Yes, I totally forgot" Darknorth nodded and walked towards the board.
"Hmm, most rookies are usually tasks with guard duty. Actually the faceless mercenary company doesn't participate in guard patrols, so we usually attach our new recruits to preexisting patrols..." Darknorth went on to explain.
The guard duties were meant to familiarize the new recruits with the structure and workings of the city. It didn't pay as well and was a bit lackluster, but it was necessary. They had to know the city they were working in, right?
"So, yeah, that's pretty much it, you can do the guard patrol thing for about 2 weeks tops, I think it pays about 20 silver coins every hour." Darknorth explained.
This pay was pretty good, even the luxurious courtyard they were staying in before only collected 2000 silver coins a month, with the 240 a day he would get, it would be enough to enjoy a pretty decent life. That's forgetting the fact that Arian would probably receive more than him.
He couldn't help but sigh, being a guard in Duan city was definitely a very lucrative pursuit. At least for normal people.
"Okay, we'll do it!!" Leon nodded his head, showing interest in the guard thing.
"We?" Darknorth frowned when he heard those words, was Leon insinuating….that Arian would be going on guard duty with him? What kind of logic was this? A level 3 mage acting like a guard? Even in duan city, it was absurd.
"Hehe, Brother Badur, I think you should reconsider, having a level 3 mage as a guard might scare whomever you're placed under…" Darknorth tried to persuade. Forgetting about how absurd it sounded, there was no way anyone in their right senses would agree to take command of a level 3 mage, if the person wasn't a level 3 himself.
At least that was except for people like Leon.
"How would they know?" Arian, who was standing behind Leon, twisted her head in an asking manner. Actually, magic users Below level 3 could not tell if one was a level 3 mage. Trying to see through them would just leave them with a big question mark.
Unless they saw them make a move, fly, or they used special techniques to see through their power level. They would never know how powerful the person beside them truly was.
"I..." Darknorth was a bit dumbfounded. He thought she was just Leon's personal guard and would be happy if she didn't have to go through the humiliation of being a City guard. But she seemed adamant to stay by Leon's side for some reason.
"Well, okay, I guess....." Darknorth nodded and pulled out a medallion, he then pointed them to the direction of the East city guard house.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Soon, Arian and Leon made their way over to the location.
"Get out of the way!!!" Just as they got there, though, they were met with a strange scene.
A young man in a city guard's uniform could be seen running for his life. The look on his face showed a clear sign of fear.
"Get back here Carlson and be a man!!!" From the main door of the Eastern city guard house, a bulky lady with fiery red hair chased after the guard.
She was going to teach him a lesson.
