Chapter 825 - Scram, You Fool! (1)
Li Meili was frozen in place for a moment before she snapped out from her daze and rushed up to her husband's side. She shook him by his shoulder but Zhang Jiren didn't respond.
"Zhang Jiren!" she called out again and again, but he didn't give her the slightest reaction. How could this happen? Li Meili thought. She shouldn't have agreed to have a night out with him if she knew he was not up to it.
She put her hand on his forehead and immediately felt that he was burning up. Li Meili tried to lift him off the floor, but he was just too heavy and tall for her.
"Darling, you have to wake up. Please…" she begged him before frantically looking around for a phone to seek help. Her fingers immediately dialed her best friend's number she knew by heart.
Her hands were visibly shaking as she held the phone in her hand. After three rings, Tang Moyu finally picked up her call. Li Meili couldn't think of anyone who could help her except for the empress.
"Meili? What's wrong?" The empress's voice sounded like she just woke up from her slumber.
"Moyu, you have to help me." This time Li Meili burst into tears as she looked at her husband's unmoving form still on the floor. "Jiren, he…."
She had no idea how to explain what had happened. She didn't even know how long Zhang Jiren had been unconscious before she found him. Zhang Jiren tended to wake up before her and if she was right it would have been half an hour before she found him unconscious.
"Calm down, Li Meili. Call an ambulance and take him to the hospital as soon as possible. Moyu and I will be there shortly." This time, it was Feng Tianyi's voice that Li Meili heard from the line.
That brought her back to her senses and agreed with him. Once she hung up the call, she immediately called an ambulance and did what Feng Tianyi told her to do. She stayed by Zhang Jiren's side until the medics came to pick them up.
Li Meili allowed them to take her husband while she retrieved her purse and their keys before following them in the ambulance. As she closed the door behind her, three Lily of the valleys fell from the vase where Zhang Jiren put them earlier. Li Meili had no idea that aside from 'a return to happiness', the Lily of the valley also signified sadness or pain due to loss or death.
She silently cried at Zhang Jiren's side, holding his hand while one of the medics tended to check his vital signs once the ambulance drove them to the hospital. Zhang Jiren had been feeling well these past days and hadn't shown any indication that he was in pain.
Li Meili had seen him occasionally taking pills, and he had assured her that he was alright.
Just as Feng Tianyi said, they arrived shortly after Zhang Jiren had been rushed to the ER, leaving Li Meili waiting outside to wait. The sky was already bright outside, and she wasn't sure if she was dreaming or not.
Wasn't it only last night when they were happy conversing over dinner together, spending their night in bliss? So how come she was outside the Emergency Room, waiting for the doctors to tell her about her husband's condition?
"Meili." Tang Moyu sat next to her, her eyes looking around, while Feng Tianyi took it to himself to check on his brother-in-law's condition from the nurses that were on duty.
"What happened?" Tang Moyu asked. She obviously came with Feng Tianyi in a hurry as she had only donned a simple loose dress that was enough to hide her small baby bump. Her hair was also tied in a low ponytail and her face was free from any makeup.
"I woke up this morning and found him unconscious on the floor. He's also burning up with fever. Moyu, I'm scared," Li Meili answered.
She wasn't crying anymore, but she couldn't stop herself from trembling in fear. The last time she was outside the operating room, hadn't she lost Tang Beixuan? She certainly didn't want to experience it all over again.
It was only two hours later did Li Meili find herself in a private hospital with her husband still lying unconsciously on the bed. His attending physician came to explain to them what caused it.
"It's not the first time this has happened, but I already told him to make sure he's not alone just in case. The tumor has been putting pressure on his brain," the doctor said,
"Would this affect his surgery in three days?" Tang Moyu asked. Zhang Jiren was already scheduled to have the tumor removed. Thankfully, the tumor wasn't malignant, and he would be able to live after his surgery so long that he wouldn't face any complications.
"No, but I suggest that he stay here, so we could monitor his condition before his surgery. We are just waiting for our neurosurgeons to confirm their availability."
"Why? I thought everything was ready for his surgery?" Feng Tianyi asked. He was sure Tang Moyu had been hands-on on every detail her twin brother would undergo.
The doctor pushed the bridge of his glasses and sighed.
"I regret to inform you that we are a little understaffed right now. Because of the massive accident that took place this weekend; most of our doctors have a lot of things on their hands."
"Then what do we do?" The empress frowned. "Would it be alright if we transfer to another hospital at this time?"
"I see no problem with that, Madam Feng. As long as his doctors are proficient enough to do surgery. The location of the tumor is quite problematic. Just a slight mistake might cause Mr. Zhang a loss of vision," he explained.
Tang Moyu thanked the doctor and followed him outside to discuss the procedure Zhang Jiren would undergo in a few days. She wasn't sure if Li Meili was strong enough to hear the details herself.
