Chapter 806 - You Better Not Die (2)
It's been a week since Zhang Jiren returned, and Li Meili thought that their relationship would return to normal, but that didn't happen. Zhang Jiren would leave before the dawn breaks and would return home late at night.
It also didn't help that the rumors about him being spotted meeting a popular lawyer in Shenzhen reached Li Meili's ears. The lawyer was known to handle and win several cases related to divorce and custody battles. Whether Zhang Jiren met the woman to seek her help for their upcoming divorce, Li Meili wasn't sure.
It made sense why the rumors about her and Zhang Jiren's marriage on the rocks had been the talk of the town these days. Even her father had given her a call to question her if she was having problems with her husband which she vehemently denied.
Li Meili wanted to ask him what was going on, and if he was planning to get a divorce soon with her. But every time she was facing Zhang Jiren, the words she wanted to say would be forgotten. She didn't want to accuse him of cheating behind her back and neither did she believe that he would betray her.
Still, it didn't mean the rumors about him didn't upset her. Li Meili reminded herself that what they had was just temporary, but knowing that she would lose him like this had bothered her greatly.
But why? She wondered. Why did she have conflicting feelings for her husband like this? The more time she spent with him, the more she didn't like to part from him. Would it be selfish if she asked him not to divorce yet?
Every night that he wasn't by her side made her think that he was preparing her for their inevitable separation. The empty space next to her in bed, the times when she open Leyan's nursery room only to find him not being there was enough to make her feel sad.
Was this how it's going to be once they divorced? Had she really gotten used to having Zhang Jiren around that she couldn't imagine her life without him in it anymore?
Li Meili knew that she was the one who asked him to marry her and be her husband for a limited time. But now, every day passed that she hadn't seen him nor heard his voice felt like she'd been forsaken by him.
"Is the food not to your liking, Meili?" Zhang Jiren asked her when he noticed that she barely touched the breakfast he made that morning. This was one of those rare days that he was at home and not working. Today, he promised he would spend the whole day with Leyan whom he'd been missing for some time now.
Li Meili shook her head as she poked the half-finished meal on her plate with her chopsticks. She wanted to confront him about the rumors going around, but she didn't want him to misunderstand her curiosity.
Damn it. Why couldn't she ask him why he met that female lawyer? She had seen the photos and the slight smile Zhang Jiren had on his face with that beautiful woman standing next to him. The woman had a polite smile on her face as they stepped out of the restaurant where the two met.
Li Meili had to admit that they looked great together. She wasn't even sure if this was the kind of woman Zhang Jiren preferred— tall, slim, elegant, and prim and proper— something she was sure she was not. Then again, she never probed about her husband's past affairs nor questioned him if he had someone special in his heart.
At this moment, her heart was turbulent, but her face remained calm. If Zhang Jiren wouldn't tell her anything, then she had no right to question him. She might be his wife, but she was the one who forced him into this arrangement,
"We only have over three months left, Jiren. Do you have plans?" she asked calmly, trying to hide the fact that her heart was beating fast, not knowing how he would answer her.
Was he worried about their impending divorce? Was it really okay for him to part ways like this? Li Meili couldn't believe that she was the one hesitating this time.
Zhang Jiren was just about to take some food with his chopsticks, but his hand paused midair. Li Meili thought he would continue eating as if nothing had happened. However, he placed his chopsticks down and gave her a curious look.
"Is there something else you want to ask?" he asked in return, clasping his hands together as he regarded her. He looked extremely calm for someone who'd been accused of cheating behind her back by everyone.
As if knowing what Li Meili wanted to ask, Zhang Jiren didn't dare to beat around the bush and addressed the rumors circulating about him for the past week. It was impossible for Li Meili not to hear it.
"I gave you my word that I wouldn't see another woman behind your back as long as we are married. What people misunderstood about me meeting Miss Xia was purely out of business. Indeed, our time together as husband and wife is about to end, Meili. So it's only natural for me to make the preparations," he explained, trying to gauge her reaction.
"I only want the best for you and Leyan," he added.
It was supposed to assure Li Meili, but it only made her want to cry out of frustration. Damn it. Damn it all. Why was she being like this anyway?
Li Meili shivered hard, her grip on her chopsticks tightened unconsciously. So, Zhang Jiren wanted to divorce her then. She wanted to argue that she wasn't ready yet, that maybe they needed to delay their divorce as she and Leyan still needed him in their lives.
"I see…" she replied after a long silence between them. Since Zhang Jiren already voiced out his intention for them to get divorced, Li Meili knew that she didn't have any right to ask him to stay married to her longer than what they agreed on.
