Chapter 804 - Don't Hesitate, Jiren (2)
Feng Tianyi followed his wife as they went back to see Zhang Jiren who just woke up from his short nap. His brother-in-law sat up from the bed, careful of the IV that was attached to one of his hands.
"How did the tests go?" Zhang Jiren asked his sister, while Feng Tianyi took a seat on the couch still in a daze.
"I'm cleared, but that doesn't mean we can't be careful in the future." Tang Moyu sat on the stool next to his hospital bed, wondering how she should tell his condition to Li Meili.
"That's good to hear." Zhang Jiren released a breath he didn't know he was holding. He then noticed Feng Tianyi's unusual expression. "What's wrong with your husband?" he questioned his sister.
Tang Moyu glanced at her husband and sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. She also hadn't expected that this was how Feng Tianyi would react about the news of her pregnancy. She hadn't felt any signs and symptoms so far, so she was also surprised to hear about the pregnancy.
"I'm pregnant, that's why," she told her brother.
Zhang Jiren blinked twice before a smile bloomed on his face.
"Congratulations, Moyu Jie. That's good to hear."
"Thanks." Tang Moyu smiled back. Although the news came as a surprise, she was ecstatic to know that she and Feng Tianyi were expecting their next child. She just hoped that it wouldn't be twins this time as carrying her little buns had been hard for her before.
"The doctor recommends that you undergo surgery to remove the tumor in your abdomen as soon as possible, and in case it's malignant, to have chemotherapy later to kill the remaining cancer cells," she informed her twin.
The smile on Zhang Jiren's face faltered, his sight fell onto his hands.
"Don't tell me you are hesitating," Tang Moyu said when she noticed his expression. "Please don't be a coward like our father. Don't put me in a tough situation, Jiren. I don't want to lose another brother. We will get through this together. You don't have to face this problem on your own."
"I understand," Zhang Jiren conceded. Since she had put it this way, how could he deny her and not accept getting treatment. "But please don't tell, Meili. I didn't want her to be worried."
Tang Moyu scoffed at that. She didn't understand why he was doing this to her best friend.
"I don't get you," she said. "You know well what Meili would do if she knew about this."
"We're divorcing soon. I don't want to prolong this marriage any further," Zhang Jiren said before pulling out the files his assistant brought to him that morning, passing it to his sister.
"Here. I already signed my part. If things don't work out well during my surgery, please give it to Meili."
The moment he found out that he had tumors and that they had started affecting his body, he knew that his time with Li Meili and Leyan was running out. He knew about that thing in his abdomen as he had been having symptoms for a while— well, it was hard to miss when he'd been vomiting blood. He was also aware that there must be something wrong with his head as well as his headaches were too abnormal. This was why he had called his lawyer ahead of time and asked him to prepare the divorce papers as soon as possible.
He and Li Meili only had a few months left before their second wedding anniversary came, but with his illness starting to affect him, Zhang Jiren knew that he might need to give her freedom back earlier than what they'd agreed on.
Tang Moyu opened the first folder, her eyes widening slightly before a deep frown appeared on her face. It was a divorce paper that her brother had indeed signed. It didn't surprise her that he made some preparations ahead of time, but she really didn't think he and Li Meili had to divorce at this crucial time.
More than anything else, what Zhang Jiren needed now was everyone's support and understanding— including his own wife. It didn't matter if their marriage was a contractual one because Tang Moyu had no doubt that the days the two spent with each other was enough to build familial ties between them.
"Don't be so cruel to yourself, Jiren. I know you love Meili, but don't you trust her?" she asked him. Tang Moyu wasn't also blind not to see that her best friend also cared about him. As for Meili knowing what she truly felt for Zhang Jiren— that was another question no one even Li Meili knew the answer to.
"It's not that I don't trust her, Moyu Jie. It's me that I don't trust," Zhang Jiren confessed. "The past months I shared with her and Leyan were the best time in my life. I didn't regret one bit that I married her and I know I would have done it all over again if we can turn back time."
As for her best friend, Tang Moyu wouldn't be surprised if Li Meili hadn't realized it yet that she was also in love with Zhang Jiren.
"I don't want to confuse her feelings, Moyu Jie," she heard Zhang Jiren say. "I know that Tang Beixuan is still in her heart. I don't dare replace him in Meili and Leyan's lives."
He was just a substitute husband for Li Meili anyway. The person that should have been by her side was Tang Beixuan, not him. As for his feelings for Li Meili, it was his problem to deal with.
"I really think you should discuss this with her, Jiren. Don't jump into conclusions," Tang Moyu suggested to her brother. She hadn't thought that Zhang Jiren could be this hard-headed like her best friend.
Couldn't her brother and Li Meili just admit that they both cared and loved each other deeply? There's really no need for them to torture themselves like this— possibly depriving themselves a happy ending both of them deserved.
Zhang Jiren only shook his head and smiled bitterly. Since he was the one who had feelings for Li Meili, he didn't want to put the responsibility and pressure on her to accept them.
