Chapter 53: How to Stop Shen Yue from picking up Garbage
Chapter 53
Shen Yue thought back and started to organize her words.
"Before it started, I remembered all the people who weren't doing anything and where they were standing."
"Mm-hmm." Shen Yichen listened while somehow producing an auto-heating mug from somewhere and started warming up some milk for Shen Yue.
"From when I turned around to when the director called 'action', that was the time needed to get into position. Since there were no running sounds during that time, it means everyone walked over at a normal pace. As long as I knew the time it took and the starting distances, I could figure it out by matching the walking speed."
Shen Yichen nodded. What Shen Yue said might be hard for others to understand immediately, but he grasped the key points right away. "So you weren't judging their gender, you were identifying specific people, right?"
Shen Yue stared at the milk Shen Yichen was warming up for her, and suddenly said, "I want to add some honey."
Shen Yichen blanked for a moment, then pushed the heating mug towards the middle of the table to make sure it was safe before turning to find some honey.
Shen Yue watched as the milk started steaming up, pondering how to subtly hint to her older brother that more than plain milk, she preferred sweetened milk, and more than sweetened milk, she loved honey milk, and most of all, yogurt!
Why did she have to be saddled with such a difficult problem? Why couldn't her brother just buy her the yogurt she loved and make her drink it?
That way she could happily drink what she wanted without any psychological burden. This moment reminded Shen Yue once again of the difficulties of the world.
When could she finally attain yogurt freedom?
When Shen Yichen came back, he saw Shen Yue's ferocious expression again, leaving him unable to confirm if she really liked honey milk or not.
"How much do you want?"
Shen Yue jumped down from the sofa and ran over to Shen Yichen, reaching out her hand. "I want to do it myself."
So Shen Yichen handed her the spoon and held the jar of honey for her to scoop it out.
He watched as she scooped up one spoonful from the jar, quietly waiting for the excess honey to drip off before putting the whole spoonful into the milk and stirring it around.
Shen Yichen continued holding the honey jar, waiting for Shen Yue.
Shen Yue stirred and stirred.
Shen Yichen waited.
Shen Yue kept on stirring.
Shen Yichen waited...he couldn't wait anymore.
"Just one spoonful?"
Shen Yue nodded. "I originally wanted two spoonfuls, but you holding the honey jar made me feel pressured, so I only took one."
Shen Yichen was speechless.
But he had to admit Shen Yue was right. She could have scooped from the jar without it being in his hand, right on the table.
Since Shen Yue had gotten milk on the spoon she was using, Shen Yichen could only grab another clean spoon from the fridge and scooped her another spoonful of honey to add in.
"If you wanted me to put the honey jar on the table for you to scoop yourself, you can just tell me directly." Shen Yichen stirred the honey into Shen Yue's cup while lecturing her.
Shen Yue's ears perked up as she took his words to heart.
Then.
"I don't want honey milk anymore, I want yogurt."
Shen Yichen: ...
Keep calm, she's your little sister.
"Tomorrow."
Shen Yue nodded, then hugged the now perfectly warm honey milk and drank it all in one go.
Refreshing!
Time to sleep.
Shen Yue happily ran towards the bedroom, then her steps halted, as if grabbed by the collar of fate.
Shen Yichen caught Shen Yue, and went back to his earlier question. "You identified people to determine their gender, right?"
"Mm-hmm." I want to sleep.
"You knew the timing and their starting positions, but how did you know each person's ending position and movement speed? And there could be cases of the same person going on stage multiple times. If someone goes on twice, both their starting and ending points are unknowns, so how did you judge then?"
Shen Yue's eyes widened.
No way, Professor Shen! Let me rest when we get home! This is too much!
But thinking of the yogurt she'd get tomorrow, Shen Yue obediently answered, "I know everyone's walking pace and habits. As long as I remember the starting point, I can estimate where they probably ended up. Including after they walked off, I can also guess where they probably stopped based on their habits. That way I could calculate based on everyone's initial resting positions."
This game was simple, like playing shell games with transparent cups, as long as she grasped the data.
Shen Yichen was 22 years old this year, and in these 22 years, he felt he had experienced countless events, big and small. Yet today he was still frightened by his little sister's seemingly casual yet actually terrifying deductive abilities.
Why was his little sister so capable, when last semester she had only scored 40 on her math final? Her overall class ranking was near the bottom too.
But Shen Yichen reconsidered and let it go.
Shen Yue was like toothpaste - squeeze and a little comes out. If you don't squeeze her, she won't budge.
Just like on the show, if the conditions were good and no one managed her, she would only do one thing - lie there.
Realizing this, Shen Yichen didn't feel gratified, but even more distressed.
He was very busy now and had no time to 'squeeze' Shen Yue every day.
After finishing her explanation, Shen Yue turned to look at Shen Yichen, as if asking to be let go.
Shen Yichen sighed, and continued asking, "How did you remember it all?"
She seemed to just eat and sleep on the show every day, and didn't appear to do anything special, so how did she remember it?
Upon hearing this, Shen Yue knew this was the start of a long and arduous rhythm. She didn't want to remember either, but she had been this way since she was little - anything she saw or heard, she would remember completely clearly, and she couldn't forget no matter how hard she tried.
She would remember every staff member who walked past her room door, who passed by her each day.
And so, she just remembered.
But how could she explain this?
"Um... they came over, then left, and I just remembered it."
Shen Yichen: ...
Sure enough, it was just a momentary burst of cleverness from his little sister.
He should keep thinking of other ways to ensure Shen Yue wouldn't end up dumpster diving in the future.
