Volume 2 Chapter 22: Baking Bread At The Crack Of Dawn
The next morning,
"PO!" Keith didn't wake up by himself. He would wake up early all the time.
But not this time. Today, this was done by Mir as he jumped up and down on his stomach!
"Ughh, five more minutes, Mir." Keith pulled the blankets up and hugged Mir tightly.
"Po!" But Mir continued to fight, trying to get out. Fira helped out as she pulled on Keith's cheeks,
"Keith! Get up!" With the two doing this, Keith softly laughed,
"Alright, alright, I'll get up." He got up from his bed and yawned.
"Hey, kid,"
"Why are you here as well, Michael?!" Keith looked out his window and saw Michael there.
Michael quickly whispered, "Do you want to wake everyone up?!"
"Wait, the sun isn't even up yet." It was still dark outside.
Michael stated, "Who cares. Also, I bought the thing you wanted from Orin." Michael raised them up.
"..." I'm happy that you brought it. But it's still so early in the morning! Keith didn't know what to say.
Orin might have cursed him out. Actually, that was definitely the case. Knowing Orin's personality, cursing Michael out wasn't a surprise.
He turned to Mir and Fira. He could see the eagerness in their eyes.
You guys really want to eat it, huh? Keith sighed. He said yesterday that he would need to wake up early to make something. And it seemed those two...No, three were eager.
Two small pairs and one big pair of eyes stared at him.
Way too eager.
"Alright. I'll start it right now." Keith stated. Like that, he got changed and jumped out of the window. The place he was going to was the resting area again.
"I guess the crystal lamps work." There were crystal lamps placed on each column. Even in the dark, everyone could see.
"Yep, yep! Anyways, what are you planning to cook up?"
"Something good." Keith stretched his arms and legs, "I will be making delicious bread."
"Oooh!"
Best I get to work. Keith took out the materials needed. I need to mix the yeast, milk, and sugar together.
Yeast.
That was the ingredient Keith created while the cookies were baking.
It was simple to make potato yeast. Keith thought about making it once he saw the potatoes. But he needed sugar to make it.
And now he had it.
After stirring, it was time to make the flour mixture. Keith added sugar, eggs, and melted butter to the bowl. While he was mixing them together, Keith tossed in the yeast mixture.
As Keith mixed, the mixture started to turn into dough. Mir and Aria watched. Mir wanted to eat it now.
But Aria grabbed him,
"Mir, it's not done."
"Po." Mir looked downcasted as he stared at the round ball.
"How about you go and pick some fruits to eat." Keith turned to Fira,
"Fira, can you go with Michael and tell him which fruits are fine to pick?" The apple and orange trees were fully grown. The fruits were ready to be plucked as well.
"Gotcha!." And he was alone like that. Keith sprinkled some flour on the table and started to knead it. Bit by bit, the dough became smoother. Now, I need to let this proof.
Keith placed a towel over the bowl to let it do it. I should do the other. The dough Keith made was a milk loaf.
He wanted to make white bread.
As Keith continued to work, Michael returned with Fira and the rest. They were munching on some apples.
"Keith, catch. Here's something to eat." Michael tossed Keith an apple.
"Thanks." Keith munched the apple. It was good to eat fruit in the morning.
"Is it done?" Michael questioned.
"Nope. I need it to rise up before I can do anything." Keith stated as he finished the other dough.
"Want to do some sparring?" Michael questioned,
"Sure." Keith took out a wooden sword from his storage. The two started to spar.
"Michael, why are you holding back?" Keith realized that Michael was holding back. Michael smiled,
"Why would I go all out when you're making something?"
Stomach or fighting with Keith all out? He would take the first choice any time!
Keith chuckled. The two continued, but Michael stopped halfway, "You should check on it now."
"You really think with your stomach." Keith shook his head. But he was pushed by Michael to the bowls. He took off the towel. The dough was twice the size!
Keith took out the four loaf pans. This was what Michael had brought back. Keith was excited.
It was a simple process. Keith kneaded the dough into a long square milk loaf and a three-pullable milk loaf.
"We have to let it be proof again."
"Again?" Michael frowned. The others were sad about this as well.
"It will only be a few minutes," Keith assured them. Michael nodded. It didn't take long for the dough to poof up!
"Woah!"
"These look good."
"Let me put a wash on it. We can bake it." Keith brushed on an egg wash to give it a nice color.
